In hard ground, static penetrometers may be difficult to push without damage to the device or because insufficient reaction or force is available.  In such case, a dynamic penetrometer may be useful to physically enter the medium for "ground truthing".  A variety of point shapes, sizes, hammer or impact systems, and range of forces may be used to achieve success.  Perhaps the German DIN standards offer the most complete set of standards towards these DPTs.
