The field vane is used to determine the undrained shear strength and
in-situ sensitivity of soft to firm clays & silts. Rectangular and tapered
vanes are available from various manufacturers. Importantly, an empirical
correction has been found necessary to apply to the suv when utilized for embankment stability, bearing capacity, and excavation analyses. See
