In 1960 the Institute of Geotechnics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy at the Technische Universitat Darmstadt was established.

Including the Laboratory of Geotechnics, a testing laboratory for earthwork and ground engineering according to DIN 1054 and the Building Regulation Law, IGT is dedicated to professional assignments for public works and private contract research and consulting for foundations, especially for high-rise buildings, deep excavations, tunnels and railways, soil and groundwater remediation, landfill and ground improvement, dikes and dams, as well as research for constitutive laws.

R&D currently represents about 60% of IGT's activities.
In 2014: employing 40, annual turnover: 3 MEuro.
