Deltares Academy is Deltares’ educational facility in the field of geo- and hydraulic engineering by means of international courses, masterclasses and ICT facilities.

The international courses focus on knowledge development of professionals dealing with soil and water related projects. These are continuing education courses for practitioners, taught by practitioners. The emphasis is on why and how. Most lecturers are major players in their area of expertise. The practical application of the course content is safeguarded by the use of case histories and workshops. All courses are English spoken.

Apart from the international courses, Deltares Academy provides many courses in Dutch. The courses in Dutch are not listed here.

Furthermore participants will learn how to set-up different work flows and which modules are available within Delft-FEWS.

Advanced Delft-FEWS (flood early warning) configuration course (2 days)
The advanced configuration course is going in-depth into a number of topics extending the same Delft-FEWS application from the introductory course through exercises:

  • Data manipulation and transformations
  • Interpolations
  • Gridded data and spatial operations

Course on Basic and Advanced Exposure Models (3 days)
The Course on Basic and Advanced Exposure Models, discusses various aspects of exposure modelling, dealing with exposure as a result of a source of chemicals (or a collection of sources).

Delft3D courses
Deltares, Delft | Hydraulics, has developed an integrated 3D modelling suite for coastal, river, lake and estuarine areas. It covers numerical modelling of flows, sediment transport, waves, water quality, morphological developments and ecology. The program, Delft3D, comes in several modules that are also subject of separate courses. The standard 2-day course covers Hydrodynamic modelling (Block 1). The standard course is followed by two optional parallel courses. The first option is a 3-day course that covers environmental modelling (Block 2a). The other 3-day option deals with modelling of wave propagation, sediment transport and bed dynamics (Block 2b).

Hydrodynamic modelling in Delft3D (Block 1) (2 days)
The hydrodynamic module Delft3D-FLOW is a multidimensional hydrodynamic simulation program that calculates non-steady flow and transport phenomena resulting from tidal and meteorological forcing on a curvilinear, boundary-fitted grid.

Environmental modelling in Delft3D (Block 2a) (3 days)
Environmental modelling is based on the transport of substances in surface and ground water using the so-called advection-diffusion equation.

Modelling of sediment transport and bed dynamics in Delft3D (Block 2b) (3 days)
To simulate the evolution of random, short-crested windgenerated waves in coastal waters (which may include estuaries, tidal inlets, barrier islands with tidal ats, channels etc.) the wave module Delft3D-WAVE can be used.

Delft3D course Singapore (5 days)
This is a five days course in Singapore that teaches about Delft3D. During the first two days participant will learn 'Hydrodynamic modelling in Delft3D' and from Wednesday until Friday 'Environmental modelling' is the main subject.

International Delft3D User Conference (Pre-announcement) (2 days)
This meeting offers the opportunity to meet and discuss with the Delft3D User Community,  the maintenance & support staff and the software development teams.

DeltaBrain: a new generation in Data Model Integration (3 days)
Deltares developed the DeltaBrain concept: "Integrating expertise, experience and machine learning to improve prediction models in design and decision models." The course both general topics, such as risk thinking, economic value and people (experts), and more specific topics, such as bayesian belief networks, genetic algorithms and other machine learning (artificial intelligence) aspects. Developing a case definition for practical applications will be part of the course.

Dimensionnement des écrans de soutènement avec MSheet (1 jour)
Ce cours est destiné aux utilisateurs ou aux personnes intéressées par le logiciel MSheet pour un dimensionnement rapide et efficace des rideaux de soutènement.

Geotechnical instrumentation for field measurements (3 days)
The course provides participants with a systematic risk-driven method for planning a monitoring programme, including many practical cases.

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) (3 days)
During this three-day course participants will learn to master the design of HDD crossings while considering the risks involved.

Horizontal Directional Drilling using MDrill (1 day)
This course deals with the most important design factors and their theoretical backgrounds: drilling fluid pressures, pulling force, assessment of the strength of the pipeline.

Modelling with SOBEK (5 (optional) days)
Whether your focus lies on flood forecasting, operational water management, water quality issues, design of sewer systems, or even all of these issues: the integrated approach of the SOBEK modelling

Hydrodynamics in Rivers and Channels (day 1)
Rivers and channels are necessary for e.g. shipping, irrigation, drainage and production of drinking water. Fluctuation of discharges can cause flooding or water shortage. With SOBEK-Rural 1DFLOW you can evaluate and forecast hydraulic functioning of rivers and channels under different conditions. Furthermore you can optimize measures in rivers and channels to prevent flooding and water shortage.

Hydrodynamics 1D/2D Floodings (day 2: option 1)
A lot of effort is put in flood prevention, but what happens when a dike breaks or a water system flows over? With SOBEK-Rural Overland Flow you can simulate these calamities to investigate effect of measures, improve risk management and formulate policy.

Urban Drainage (day 2: option 2)
Urban drainage systems are used to collect storm water and wastewater in urban areas. Malfunctioning of this system can result in flooding and pollution. With SOBEK-Urban 1DFLOW & SOBEK-Urban RR you can design, evaluate and improve urban drainage systems.

Hydrology Rainfall Runoff (day 3)
Rainfall runoff processes are important in understanding and forecasting of flooding and droughts. With SOBEK-Rural RR you can simulate rainfall runoff with different catchment hydrology models.

Water Quality (day 4)
Healthy water is essential for life. A lot of policy (e.g. related to European Water Framework Directive) is aimed to protect or improve quality and ecology of water systems. With SOBEK-Rural 1DWAQ you can simulate water quality processes to investigate eutrophication, oxygen deficit, transportation of pollution or salt.

Real Time Control (day 5)
Real time control (RTC) is used in rivers, channels and sewerage systems to improve functioning of these systems by control of structures. With SOBEK-Rural RTC you can design and simulate control to optimize your water system.
